Engineering offers candidates a wealth of career possibilities and the opportunity to touch people’s lives in more ways than previously imagined. So what does an engineer do every day?
“Engineers apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop economic solutions to technical problems.” While that may be true, it doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of what engineers do, and we couldn’t sum up every incredible feat of engineering in one definition.
Engineers design machinery, build skyscrapers, and oversee public works, but they also address the needs and problems of society on many other levels. At the molecular level, they work on drug delivery systems that work inside cells.
At a macro level, they quantify the flow of pollutant particles through the soil to clean up oil spills, abandoned industrial sites and other biological hazards. At the galactic level, they are designing spacecraft for exploration of other planets.
At the atomic level, they are developing data storage that focuses on the rotation of electrons in atoms. Drinking water, safe food storage and protection of our environment are also under the engineer’s domain.
The following are several types of engineers. And what they do in each type:
– directs and coordinates the design, manufacture and testing of aircraft and aerospace products
– analyses agricultural operations and discusses new technologies and ways of doing things to improve land use, increase yields and conserve resources
– It develops new chemical products that can be used by many companies and individuals.
– selects, tests and recommends improvements to equipment and processes for alternative fuel production
– analyzes and designs solutions to problems in biology and medicine
– conceptualizes and designs processes to produce, transform and transport materials
– designs and supervises large construction projects, including roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges and water supply and wastewater treatment systems.
– researches, designs, develops and tests computer equipment such as chips, circuit boards or routers
– provides advice to clients regarding appropriate hardware and/or software to ensure that their computer systems meet their needs
– designs and develops new electrical equipment, troubleshoots and tests equipment
– uses the principles of engineering, soil science, biology and chemistry to develop solutions to environmental problems
– is responsible for ensuring that all aircraft components function properly.
