The job of a surgical instrument technician is to supervise the medical equipment used in a surgical procedure. 

Surgical instrument graduates have a great deal of responsibility in and out of the operating room. In addition to being present in the operating room to provide the requested tools, you must know how to prepare and sterilize the instruments.

Before surgery, your job is to review a patient’s medical history, supply the operating room with the necessary equipment and disinfect the patient’s incision area. 

During surgery, you will assist the surgeon in operating diagnostic machinery, monitoring the patient’s vital signs and disposing of used equipment. 

After surgery, you will transport the patient to a recovery room, sterilize the equipment for reuse and prepare the operating room for the next surgery.

Workplaces are usually in: Hospitals, medical centers, ambulatory surgery centers and doctor’s offices. 

Program, Subjects and Content of the Bachelor Degree in Surgical Instrumentation

Associate degree programs include topics in medical pathology and procedures. Students also learn the basics of medical terminology, and become experts in taking vital signs, preparing and restocking operating rooms, and safely transporting patients. 

Hands-on training is found in hands-on courses held at local hospitals and medical centers. Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and a certificate in CPR. They must also pass a background check and have current immunizations.

The courses teach students how to maintain a sterile environment in the operating room, use surgical equipment, and assist doctors and nurses in surgical procedures. 

Associate degree programs in surgical technology cover topics such as anatomy, ethics, patient care, and sterilization, giving students the knowledge they need to work in the field. 

High school students planning to enter a surgical technology program must take courses in mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physiology. The typical course in this program includes:
