Ichthyology is the scientific study of various aspects of various fish species, including history, behaviour, growth patterns and their place in ecosystems. This branch of science is closely linked to marine biology, marine ecology and zoology.

Ichthyologists devote their time to the study of different types of fish species, many focusing on one particular fish family. Most ichthyologists will go into the field to collect several samples and observe the behavior of the fish, before returning to a laboratory or office to analyze their collected data.

Full-time careers as an ichthyologist are quite rare, given their limited scope. In addition, most ichthyologists specialize even more in fish that are found in a particular region of the world, or specific type of water. An Ichthyology Course will provide you with the necessary knowledge to work with this branch of science. Many universities and educational institutes offer these courses free of charge.

What are the Ichthyology Courses ?

An Ichthyology Course is a study program that aims to provide students with knowledge of the origins, evolution, anatomy, physiology and behavior of fish. It will also help students become familiar with fish taxonomy, as well as learn to identify local fish at a glance and recognize their preferred habitats.

The Ichthyology Course provides an overview of the variety of ways that fish obtain oxygen and then distribute it around their bodies, looking in particular at the various ways that gills adapt in various species. You will learn about the polar and deep-sea environments inhabited by fish and the physical characteristics and adaptations that these environments foster in aquatic life, illustrating the close association between biology and the environment.

Upon completion of the course, the graduate will be able to plan and coordinate stock assessment activities, work with other researchers and professionals to preserve and monitor habitats and stocks, prepare reports and presentations, collect samples, and conduct research both in the laboratory and in the field.

Graduates of this course will also be able to implement land and water habitat remediation measures. Examples from various groups are used during this course to provide a good overview of fish biology.
