What Does ENGINEERING Mean ?
If we want to know the etymological origin of the word engineering that now occupies us, what we have to do is to leave, metaphorically speaking, until the Latin, because we will discover that this term comes from the Latin word ingenium. A term that can be translated as «to produce».
Engineering is the study and application of different branches of technology. The professional in this field is called an engineer.
The activity of the engineer means the realization of an idea in reality. This means that, through techniques, designs and models, and with the knowledge coming from the sciences, engineering can solve problems and satisfy human needs.
Engineering also implies the application of inventiveness and ingenuity to develop a certain activity. This, of course, does not mean that the scientific method is not used to carry out plans. Among the different tasks that an engineer can carry out, there is research (the search for new techniques), design, development, production, construction and operation.
In the same way, and taking into account the important role that technologies play in our daily life, we cannot avoid the discipline or scientific branch that is called computer engineering. It is in charge of working and designing solutions in matters of communication that are capable of carrying out the processing of information in an automatic way.
In this sense, professional engineers must have knowledge about computing, telecommunications, software design, electronics, algorithms and formal languages or virtual instrumentation, among others.
We also have to underline the forestry engineering that is in charge of undertaking all kinds of studies, analyses, projects and interventions in the field of environmental protection. Thus, its object of work is both the mountains and the wetlands, the parks, the fauna, the forest roads and paths, the hunting and fishing resources or the renewable energies.
And, of course, we must also highlight aeronautical engineering, which is responsible for creating and manufacturing all kinds of devices that have the ability to fly. That is to say, it is the one that works with airplanes, space equipment, missiles or airplanes of diverse typology. Hence, within this branch, aerodynamics, propulsion, aeroelasticity and computer science take centre stage.
Agricultural engineering is that which promotes the social productive development of agriculture, without neglecting natural resources. Geological engineering is in charge of solving the problems that relate man to the geological environment.
Commercial engineering is mainly linked to marketing and public relations, since the engineer must be in charge of managing this kind of issues. Finally, we can emphasize that civil engineering is the science that applies knowledge of geology, chemistry and physics to develop infrastructures and works of all kinds.
