💚 WHAT IS CIVIL ENGINEERING ?

What Does a Civil Engineer Do Exactly ?

Civil Engineering is the branch of Engineering that applies the knowledge of Physics, Chemistry and Geology to the elaboration of infrastructures, mainly buildings, hydraulic and transport works, in general of great size and for public use.

Labour Competence

In general, civil engineering works involve the work of a large number of people (sometimes hundreds or even thousands) over periods ranging from a few weeks or months to several years. Due to the high cost of the work involved (think of the cost of a motorway or a railway line) much of the work is done for the State, or for large companies that intend to operate an infrastructure in the long term (motorways and toll tunnels, railway companies, etc.).

Civil Engineers And Their Various Skills

Civil Engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines. It also has the largest number of specializations. You have the general balance of civil engineers who manage construction projects. These types of engineers tend to work more with specialists.

The highest paid civil engineers are those who have the ability to initiate and complete a large engineering project, while relying on specialized engineers to do a certain aspect of the project. If you are an aspiring engineer with a holistic approach to construction both on the technical and business side you will gain more opportunities.

Civil engineers who are able to use different computer tools for the success of a project are also sought after due to the integration of engineering and construction technology. Intermediate qualifications in office programs as well as advanced knowledge in software engineering such as AutoCAD and Autodesk should be the basic knowledge for all civil engineers. Engineers It is also advisable to take to architecture and design courses of a multifaceted approach to construction.

Areas of Knowledge

The knowledge required to work as a civil engineer is: Calculation of efforts in structures before different solicitations (behavior of the beams of a bridge before the passage of a train, of a dam before the hydrostatic pressure of the water that it retains, of a shoe when transmitting the weight of the structure that supports to the land.

Knowledge of the materials that will be used in the execution of the work (resistance, weight, aging, etc.) Knowledge of the behaviour of the land in the face of the requests of the structures that are supported on it (bearing capacity, stability in the face of such requests, etc.).

Knowledge of hydrology for the calculation of floods or flows for the design of dams or reservoirs, dimensioning of bridge spans. Knowledge of capacity calculation techniques for the dimensioning of roads, aesthetics, history, art, landscape, procedures, techniques and machinery necessary for the application of the above knowledge.

There are a large number of possible technical solutions to the same problem and often none of them is clearly preferable to another. It is the task of a Civil Engineer to know all of them in order to discard the less suitable ones and study only the most promising ones, thus saving time and money.

It is also the job of the Civil Engineer to know the possible ways of implementing the adopted solution or the machinery available for it. He or she must also have the necessary knowledge to evaluate the possible problems that may arise in the work and make the right decision, considering, among other things, aspects of a social and environmental nature.

For all these reasons, in addition to a solid training, it is vital in the work of a Civil Engineer to have extensive work experience, which allows him/her to recognize the problem at first sight and adopt solutions that have proven to be reliable in the past.
