Models of Textured Walls

For this section we have chosen the models and techniques most used today. If we talk about plaster wall textures we could group them in two categories according to model, method and application technique: Hand applied texture and Spray applied texture.

Hand Applied Plaster Wall Texture

These can vary greatly depending on the skill level or techniques used. Some gypsum panel textures use special brushes to step or turn patterns in the clay, other textures are applied with a skillet and knife or a hawk and a trowel, then brushes or knives or rollers are used to create patterns in the clay.

This technique uses specially designed brushes and knives to create patterns with gypsum board composite (a combination of mainly gypsum powder and water) to texture otherwise smooth walls.

Common Techniques for Hand-Applied Plaster Textures

Skip Palette

The term skip palette has generally been used to refer to various hand plaster textures. A true jumping trowel texture is applied with a special curved knife 18 inches wide.

The mud is applied very thinly and the angle of the knife to the gypsum board surface causes the mud to jump across the surface leaving the texture behind. A true jumping trowel texture is identified by the small round circles of mud that extend across the smooth surface below.

Hawk and Paddle

The terms falcon and trowel refer to two tools used in plaster stucco and cement finish applications. The falcon refers to a 16″ by 16″ flat table top with a handle underneath that protrudes perpendicular to the surface of the falcon.

The material is placed on the hawk in a small mound. The pallet is a flat rectangular metal pallet with a handle that extends parallel to the angle of the pallet. The material is moved from the hawk to the wall in one quick motion by scraping the material onto the pallet and then onto the wall.

Santa Fe Texture

A true Santa Fe texture is a very low profile drywall texture. It can be described as appearing as two smooth layers of gypsum board, the top layer allowing the bottom layer to be seen in random areas.

This is because it rubs a thin flat layer of gypsum mud on a well-prepared gypsum panel surface and does not allow the mud from the gypsum panels to cover the entire area.

Swirl texture

This texture leaves a pattern of circles around it. To produce this texture, the surface must be well prepared.

Apply a thin layer of plaster mud evenly, this can be done with a paint roller with thick pile covering, care should be taken to overlap the circles in such a pattern that no gaps are left, establish the direction and distance of the swirls desired before starting.

Plan the pattern before starting, The swirl pattern is created with a medium bristle brush or a wallpaper brush, The length of the brush will determine the diameter of the circles created, once the pattern is made all that remains is to let it dry and paint.

Strong Treading Texture

Once the textured mud has been applied to the surface, a special brush is used to step on patterns in the mud. The preferred style brush to use has stiff bristles aligned in an oval pattern on a wooden base that attaches to an extension pole. These brushes are known as “crow’s feet” brushes.

Spray Gypsum Texture Techniques

Gypsum panel texture sprayers come in different brands, shapes and sizes. They usually consist of a hopper for the textured material, which is pumped from the hopper through a long hose and an air compressor, these can be electric or gas powered.

Some Spray Texturing Techniques

Spatter Texture

This type of texture is splashed on the walls, allowed to set slightly and then “knocked down” with a large, thin knife. Two things are needed to apply it: a supply of material and compressed air. Once the texture is slightly established, it is smoothed out with a large flat knife to produce the falling effect.

Orange Skin Texture

This type of texture resembles the orange peel, it is similar in its application to the knock-down or drop style, the difference is that this texture after being sprayed on the wall surface is left to dry as is, unlike the drop style which must be passed with a knife after application.

Popcorn Texture

The textures of the popcorn have the appearance of popped corn, hence the nickname. Spraying this texture requires the use of a special texture sprayer. The same texture sprays are used when spraying orange peels and detachable textures.

The popcorn textures have styrofoam, as well as other materials added to the mud mixture of the drywall to create the puffy appearance.

White Wall Background

Imagen de Fondo para Pared Blanca / White Wall Background ImagesThere are different types of materials that we can use as background before painting a wall, including: cementitious backgrounds, acrylics and fillings. The following should be taken into account when preparing the wall and applying the background:

  • Clean or wash the wall of dust or dirt, you can use a hard bristle brush or hydro washing machine
  • If the wall has old paint, it should be removed, you can use a spatula, sandpaper, grinder, hydro washing machine and steel brush
  • Cure loose material, holes or cracks with masonry filler

Application:

Once prepared, the filling material should be applied with a trowel in 3 or 4 coats until it is completely smooth without gaps or scratches

Texturing an Old Wall with Texturized Wall Paste

To texture an old wall previously painted or with saltpetre problems, it is important to take into account the following recommendations:

  • Eliminate all types of dust, dirt or grease
  • Wash the surface with water or high pressure and let dry
  • Removing the old paint
  • Repair holes and cracks and let the surface dry
  • If the surface is dusty, apply vinyl sealant
  • If the glossy surface is dull with sanding
  • Detecting the source of moisture and correcting it
  • Do not apply exterior texture in direct sunlight or in temperatures below 10ºc and humidity above 85%.
  • Textured Brick Wall

There are several ways to give your walls a brick appearance and texture, one of them is to apply cementitious coating (frieze or masonry paste) to the surface and then apply pressure with a mold usually rubber that prints the material in the form of brick, it is important to do so before the coating dries.

Texture for Painting Interior Walls

Textured paints are usually applied in two coats, the first coat is the base and the second is the finish, you must work quickly to cover the entire surface before the coating dries to avoid rigid lines of intersection, can be applied with a standard roller and brush to cut the edges and corners. To apply texture, first make sure the walls are clean and completely dry.
