How to Upholster a Swivel Chair?
Step 1: Dismantle your swivel chair
Both the backrest and seat of the swivel chair are probably screwed to the main frame, take a look at your swivel chair and dismantle it. In the picture, there were two screws holding the backrest in place and four screws holding the seat in place.
Once you have unscrewed the backrest and seat, you must remove the padded part of the frame. With this chair it was simply a case of removing the padded part with a flat-head screwdriver (used as a lever).
Step 2: Cut your chosen fabric to size
With the padded back and seat as a guide, cut out your new baric, making sure there is enough fabric to pull the sides and staple to the back of each padded piece. It would allow at least four or five inches all year round.
Step 3: Staple your fabric in place
Using a staple gun, staple your new fabric to the bottom of the quilted pieces, starting at the center of all four sides and pulling the soft, tight fabric together before stapling in place. Once you have secured all four sides of the fabric, work around it all the time, staple the fabric together and keep it around the curves.
Step 4: Replace the quilted pieces in the frames
Once you have stapled the new fabric around each piece, replace the padded backrest and seat in the frames and then screw the frames to the base of the chair.
How to Lower a Swivel Chair?
To lower the seat, place all your weight on the chair and activate the lever or the button on the actuator (the lever is always on the right side towards the rear). The chair will gradually lower. When the desired height is reached, release the actuator. To raise the seat, shift your weight to your feet. Operate the actuator. The chair will lift automatically. Then lower it again to the desired position.
Position the chair so that your feet are flat on the floor and your lower legs are at a 90-degree angle (or better) to your upper legs.
How to Make a Swivel Chair?
PVC patio swivel chairs are relatively simple. You will need 4 feet of chair, a vertical one that can rotate freely and 4 supports at the top to mount the chair. The end result will be a stool-like chair that can be dismantled for compact storage.
After making one or two chairs, you may decide to try alternative designs, such as a PVC box with a short swivel bracket.
Step 2: Cut the parts
Cut four pieces of 18-inch long pipe. Cut four more pieces 12 inches long. For those in the upright position, cut a single piece 24 inches long. Use sandpaper to remove burrs or rough edges from the cuts.
Step 3: Prepare the rotary
The upright will fit into a vertical opening in the base, i.e. one of the 5-way connectors. A small amount must be sanded to make the vertical position rotate. Sand along the bottom 2 inches of the pipe until it fits snugly in 5 directions and rotate smoothly.
Be careful not to remove too much PVC material. If the pipe fits too loosely, it will move and cause damage to the cross-connector.
Step 4: Assemble the chair
Glue the 18-inch pieces into one of the cross-connectors. Glue the 12-inch pieces to the other. Allow the glue to dry for at least 1 hour. Insert the unextended end of the upright position into the cross with the 12-inch arms.
Point that end and place the sanded end into the other 5-way connector. The assembly should rotate smoothly. Insert a screw through the upper crosshead connector and into the vertical position.
Step 5: Install a seat
Place the seat on top of the assembly so that the arms form an «X» to sit on. Attach the arms to the seat bracket using the appropriate tools for the seat design. If this method is not stable for your particular seat, install a square piece of plywood on the arms and then attach the seat of the chair to the plywood.
How to Remove the Wheels From a Swivel Chair?
Learn how to remove the wheels from the swivel chair:
- Some wheels are secured without a lock and can be easily removed if you pull hard enough. However, in some cases, you may have to lever the caster to remove it from the chair.
- To remove the casters from your office chair, you will need a flathead screwdriver and a crowbar. Follow these simple instructions:
- Turn your office chair or desk to access the wheels.
- Hold the leg of the chair with one hand and grasp the caster with the other hand.
- Use the force to pull the wheel out with your hand. If it doesn’t move, pull out the screwdriver.
- Use the screwdriver handle to slowly pull out the wheel. Quickly place the end that pulls on the nails of your lever.
- Place the lever between the leg of the chair and the wheel. Start pushing down on the handle of the lever to quickly remove the wheel.
How to Assemble a Swivel Chair ?
Unpack your office chair kit. Remove all parts of the kit and also remove the plastic from the parts if there are any. Assign the parts and organize the different parts of your chair to find them when you need them later.
To connect the bottom of the seat to the main chair mechanism, use the four screw head bolts provided and screw the mechanism to the seat. Be sure to screw it in firmly because this connection should support almost all the weight.
Now slide the chair back over the mechanism. To do this, hold the chair upside down. This makes it easier to slide it into the chair mechanism. The next step is to screw everything on with the bolts from your kit. Place the armrests in the holes on the bottom of the chair.
Attach the wheels to the 5 star base of the chair. You may have to put a lot of pressure on the wheels to do that because the washers have to pop the plastic clamps. You will notice if you have done this correctly when you hear a «click» sound.
- Place the gas strut cover over the gas strut.
- Now place the gas strut on the 5 star base of the chair.
- Connect the chair mechanism with the gas strut at the 5 star base.
- If your office or game chair has a separate headrest, place it on the back of the chair.
- Check all bolts for tight fit. And done.
How to Fix a Swivel Chair ?
Step 1: Level the chair and remove the base
Level the office swivel chair on a flat surface and make sure it is in a horizontal position. Remove the fastening clips on the bottom of the seat and then remove the base. If the base is secured by bolts or nuts, you can use the appropriate wrench to loosen and remove them.
Step 2 – Inspect the Interior of the Chair
Look inside the chair to see if there are any damaged or broken parts that may need to be replaced. If there are any broken parts other than the gas cylinder, be sure to replace them with the correct replacement. Consult the manufacturer’s manual for appropriate replacement parts.
Step 3 – Remove Existing Gas Cylinder
Place a socket wrench in the gas cylinder and turn it, loosening the cylinder until it releases easily. Be careful not to pull it hard, as it may damage other parts of the chair.
Step 4 – Install the New Gas Cylinder
You can buy the new gas cylinder at any hardware or home improvement store. Ask a sales representative to help you make sure you choose the right replacement part. Once you have the new gas cylinder, and place the tapered end inside the column of the chair.
Step 5 – Reassemble the chair
With the new gas cylinder in place, you can replace the base of the chair. Use your wrench to tighten all the bolts and nuts you removed. When you reassemble the entire chair, check that the gas cylinder works properly by adjusting the height of the seat.
How to Make a Wooden Swivel Chair ?
Having a swivel chair ottoman available to sit on after a hard day’s work is a great luxury that your feet will be very happy about. You can build one yourself with just a few steps and hand tools.
Start with the frame
The base of the ottoman swivel chair is the best place to start. Cut a piece of 3/4″ plywood that is 15″ x 15″. Once it is cut, cut an identical piece for the top of the ottoman.
Finish the frame of your ottoman with four 15″ x 20″ sides. Glue all the pieces together and screw down firmly.
Upholstery With Favorite Fabric
Once you have finished, spread some foam filling over the entire ottoman and stick it to the frame. Stretch your favorite type of fabric (leather, chamois or regular cotton) over the top and sides. Gather at the bottom and secure with staples underneath.
Turn it over
The ottoman swivel chair will be able to move with some swivel wheels at each corner of the bottom of the ottoman. These wheels will help you to roll easily and turn.
And that’s it, we have our wooden swivel chair.
How to Clean Swivel Chair Wheels ?
Flip your chair
Place the chair face down on the floor with the wheels up. Sit in another chair in front of the one you are working on. This gives you easy access to the wheels. Scrape off the remaining wheels with the butter knife. The knife will fit through the slots and under the wheel cover. This allows you to remove most of the debris that prevents the wheel from rolling.
Be careful not to use too much force and create gouges in the plastic wheels, which will prevent them from turning properly. Use the tweezers to remove any hair that may be caught in the wheel. You can remove the wheels from the chair for this step if you wish, but since you will be working with a knife, it may be better to have the chair holding the wheels in place, rather than your hand.
Removing the Wheels
In most chairs, the wheels are easily removed. Some office chairs may require a screwdriver to unscrew the wheels from the chair.
Clean Up the Clutter
Rub the wheels with a cloth, trying to remove any substance left on the wheels. Wipe around the wheel cover as well as inside it. If your finger does not fit inside the cover, cotton swabs work very well to get into the narrow cracks.
Dry Each Wheel Completely
If moisture remains inside the wheel, it can cause squealing or dirt to adhere more easily. Use clean rags or paper towels to dry the wheels. If you’re at home, a low-temperature hair dryer may also work well.
Spray the inside of each wheel with an aerosol lubricant. Just a little should do the trick. Wipe off any excess lubricant as it can attract and hold dirt.
Replace the Wheels
Put the wheels on the chair or screw them on and enjoy.
Parts of a Swivel Chair
Its parts are:
- Height-adjustable backrest
- Back height adjustment knobs
- Recline Adjustment Lever
- Height Adjustment Lever
- Gas piston, seat height adjustment.
- Wheels with cover.
Swivel chair mechanism
It is a gas cylinder that has an internal piston that compresses a gas to a higher pressure when it is weighted. A friction clamp to hold the piston rod in a fixed position is the height selector. A soft spring gives a little cushion when a person sits in the chair.
If the chair is too low, a lever releases the friction clamp, allowing the piston to lift, lifting the chair against the weight of the chair. If a person is sitting on the chair at that time, the gas pressure against the piston is not sufficient, and the chair lowers.
Basically, the gas cylinder and the piston give it a low resistance turn and allow it to turn infinitely in any direction because everything is supported by the piston. Different brands operate in different ways. Some of the more complicated ones work with springs and screws. They have adjustments for seat height, back height, back tilt, seat tilt, and a screw to adjust the speed and backward tilt of the chair.
Swivel chair bases
The bases are usually 5-bladed and come in materials such as nylon, aluminum or polyamide. As its word indicates it is the base, where rests all the weight of the structure, it can be a platform with legs or it can be with wheels.
