SOCCER COURT DIMENSIONS

What are the Measurements of the Soccer Field ?

The soccer field is flexible in size. It is 100 to 130 yards (90-120 m) long and 50 to 100 yards (45-90 m) wide. In international play, the dimensions of the field are a little more strict since the length must be 110 to 120 yards (100 – 110 m) long and 70 to 80 yards (64 – 75 m) wide. An additional rule is that the length must be longer than the width, so you could not have a square field of 100 yards by 100 yards. Although these are the official rules, many children’s soccer games are played on fields even smaller than the minimum. Although the length and width are flexible, other areas of the field are generally fixed in size.

The field shall be rectangular, with the width not exceeding the length. The width shall not exceed 80 yards (73.15M) or less than 65 yards (59.44m) and the length shall not exceed 120 yards (109.72m) or less than 110 yards (100.58m). However, undersized fields may be used with the prior written consent of the competing institutions. The optimal size is 75 yards (68.58m) by 120 yards (109.73m).

Adult Soccer Field Measurements

FIFA states that the two lines of contact that form the length of the field must be between 90 and 120 meters long (100 – 130 yards). The two goal lines (where the goals are placed) form the width of the field and should be between 45 and 90 meters long (50 – 100 yards). Each half should be the same length and width as the other, and the middle line should run directly across the middle. The center circle measures 9.15 meters in radius and is located in the middle of the field.

Dimensions of the Penalty Box (adult)

The line that forms the mark for the penalty area must begin 16.5 meters from each post and extends 16.5 meters into the field at right angles. In each penalty box there is a penalty point 11 meters from the goal.

Dimensions of the Target Area (adult)

The six-yard box (or goal area) is also located inside the penalty box. Two lines are marked at right angles extending into the field and the lines are 5.5 meters apart on each side of each post. The lines that protrude into the field are also 5.5 meters long and are closed by a line that runs parallel to the goal line.

To complete the marks on the penalty box, there is a penalty arc that borders the edge of each box and this small semi-circle is drawn outside the box within a radius of 9.15 meters from the penalty point. All marks in the field must be the same width and cannot be more than 12 centimeters in size.

While the above soccer field dimensions are correct for all adult matches, international matches have slightly more stringent requirements … FIFA states that the touchline (length) must be between 100 meters and 110 meters and the width of the field (width) must be between 64 meters and 75 meters.

Official Dimensions of the Youth Soccer Field

To help younger soccer players better develop their skills, the playing fields are smaller so that they do not spend the entire game chasing a huge field and never see the ball. Youth leagues often have their own variations on the rules, particularly in the younger age groups, so the number of players often varies as well as the size of the field. The Football Association in the UK has given the following soccer pitch dimensions to help clubs mark their pitches for their various age groups…

U7 – U8 Age group: Children often play five-a-side soccer. The pitches are much smaller and should measure 37 meters x 27 meters.

U9 – U10 Age group: As players reach this age, they move up to soccer seven. The FA recommends that plots be 55 meters long and 37 meters wide.

U11 / U12 age group: The fields continue to grow as the children grow and in the U11 / U12 age group they should already be playing nine on a larger field. Here the touch lines should be 73 meters long and the goal lines should extend to a distance of 46 meters.

Age group U13 / U14: For U13 / U14 they should have progressed to playing eleven per side and the FA recommends that the fields should extend to 82 meters long and 50 meters wide.

Age group U15 / U16: The field again increases in size in U15 / U16 and in this age group the dimensions of the soccer field should be 91 meters for the length and 55 meters for the width. After this age group, youth soccer progresses to adult fields of 90 to 120 meters in length and 45 to 90 meters in width.
