How to Use the Heating Pad
- These units consist of heating elements with a removable fabric cover. Some come with useful features, such as automatic shut-off and temperature controls. They tend to cost more than microwave heating pads, but they last longer in comparison.
- The temperature limit, which is set at 176 F. Most units have a range of 110 F to 160 F. The amount of time it takes for electric heating devices to heat up varies from a couple of minutes to several minutes. The amount of time may also depend on the setting.
- If the pad is designed with self-limiting wire technologies, it may take longer to reach the maximum temperature. A general rule is to check your skin at twenty minute intervals to make sure there are no burns.
- For minor problems, such as backlight stress, a brief heat therapy (approximately fifteen minutes) is usually sufficient.
- For more severe pain, thirty minutes to two hours of heat therapy may be required. Again, you should take a short break and check your skin every few minutes.
How Does the Heating Pad Work ?
- The basic principle of heating blankets or mattress pads is that an electrical current passing through a resistance wire generates heat.
- All electric bedding contains a heating element of a long, long resistive wire attached in a serpentine shape to the entire pad or blanket (or in the case of dual control models, to each half of the product).
- Of course, much more technology is needed to make the blanket or pad safe, comfortable, evenly heated, durable and convenient to care for.
- Manufacturers achieve their various features (e.g. overheat protection, variable heat output, automatic shut-off, etc.) in different ways and this technology plus the fabric used is what makes some products more expensive or more reliable than others.
How to Fix or Repair the Heating Pad
Step 1
Be sure to have the power cord plugged firmly into the outlet. If the heating pad unit continues to turn on and off, there may be a broken cord inside. In this case, you will need to purchase another heating pad.
Step 2
Unplug the power cord of the power pad from the outlet.
Step 3
Open the control unit with a screwdriver.
Step 4
Clean the cable control unit. Cleaning is the most common solution for heating pads. Spray the control unit switch contacts with an electrical contact cleaner.
Step 5
Tighten any loose parts in the control unit with a screwdriver.
Step 6
- Connect a multimeter to the pins of the power cord while holding the controller in the «Off» position. This device will test the current of electricity through its heating pad.
- A multimeter measures AC and DC voltage and current resistance, combining the functions of an ammeter, ohmmeter, and voltmeter. You must have an infinite resistance in ohms to read.
- When you have an infinite resistance in ohms, «ohms» means the measurement of electrical resistance, so you have an open circuit or no connection at all. It means that there is a break in the wire in the electrical current, resulting in so many ohms that your multimeter cannot register them.
- Zero ohms means you have a good flow of electrical current. Turn the controller on. You should see some resistance to the electricity, but not an infinite resistance.
Step 7
- Adjust your multimeter on the RX1 scale to check the resistance. RX1 means «resistance time one», which means that each number on the multimeter scale represents the actual resistance value of the heading keypad thermostat, in this case.
- Place a multimeter probe on the output side and another probe on the input side of the thermostat. The thermostat is a switch that controls the temperature of the heating element on its heating pad. You should see a zero reading, which means the switch is working properly.
- Replace your heating pad if you see a non-zero reading. This means you have a break or resistance in the circuit and the thermostat needs to be replaced.
How to Make a Heating Pad
A simple method to make your own heating pad. You will need:
- two hand towels
- a ziplock bag
- a microwave
Step by step instructions
- Wet both towels with water. Squeeze out excess water until they are damp. Place a towel in the ziplock bag, making sure to leave the bag open. Place the bag in the microwave and heat over high heat for 2 minutes.
- Remove the bag from the microwave. Be careful, it will be hot! Seal the ziplock bag and wrap the other wet towel around the bag.
- Apply your home heating pad to the sore area. The heat should last about 20 minutes.
Method 2
- Like most people, you probably have a drawer at home for orphan socks.
- Well, now you can put those lonely socks to good use! If your neck and shoulder pain is causing you trouble, all you need is a sock and some rice.
- This pad works best if you use a larger sock, such as a tube sock.
Step-by-step Instructions
- Stuff the sock with rice. Leave enough room at the top so you can close the opening, either by sewing it up or tying it with a rubber band or string, basically anything you think will hold the rice.
- Microwave on high for 2 minutes.
- Remove from the microwave (again, be careful, it will be hot). Apply to your neck or shoulder. If you need more time once the heating pad cools down, microwave again for 1 minute and reapply.
Making your own heating pad is more economical and safer than using a heating pad. It also saves you a trip to the store when you’re too sore to leave the house. Schedule an appointment with your doctor if your muscle and joint pain persists for several days.
