FREE WOODCUT PRINTMAKING COURSE

Woodcutting (xylography or woodcut) is a relief printing technique that uses a carved wood block and is the oldest printing technique. The term is derived from the Greek xylon, “wood” and grápheim, “to write”.

It is one of the oldest reproduction and printing techniques and is easy to perform because the incision is made on a block of wood. The drawing on the block is made in relief. The removed parts, made with a special tool called a chisel, are white when printed while those in relief are black. The inked block is then pressed onto a sheet, resulting in a mirror image of the pattern or design.

There are universities and institutions that offer Woodcut Printmaking courses worldwide, which take you by the hand into the world of woodblock printing, and many of them offer such courses for free. If you want to be part of this beautiful world look for a Free Woodcutting Course.

What are the Woodcut Printmaking Courses ?

A Woodcut Printmaking Course is a training that explains the tools you need, how to cut the block, how to inline it and finally how to print.

A Course in Woodcutting is a complete guide to create woodcuts and explains exactly how to prepare a design, cut wood, inject and print the final image. With a Woodcut Printmaking Course you will soon know exactly how to create professional looking woodcuts.

In this class, you learn how to create a full color woodcut using traditional multi-block printing methods. Students begin by transferring a drawing or photograph to a piece of plywood. The student develops a block by carving areas of the wood that correspond to the negative space of the transfer.

A Woodcutting Course demonstrates the use of chisels and proper techniques to prevent hand fatigue, carving to achieve specific textures, along with tool care and sharpening. You will also learn the use of ink modifiers to create color overlays and transparencies.
