At the simplest level, iconography is the containment of deeper meanings in simple representations. It often uses symbolism to generate narrative, which in turn develops the meaning of a work. Densely populated iconography in images can convey specific hidden meanings.
Iconography helps to situate a work of art in a specific moment in history and also in the cultural context, because certain symbolic meanings can only be meaningful for a specific culture. We can find evidence of the process by which iconography, or representations, also acquire specific meanings in popular culture.Â
Currently, several universities and experienced professors in this area offer training and education through Iconography Courses. Many of these courses are given free of charge.
In an Iconography Course all aspects of icon creation and the main methodologies applied to iconographic and iconological analysis are experienced. The different types of visual discourses, iconographic genres and functions are also covered. The student’s progress in this course depends largely on their willingness to devote hours of practice in their own time.
