France

In France, the Doctorate of Letters is the name of the highest existing doctorate between 1808 and 1984 in the disciplines related to languages, letters and human sciences. Commonly called the State Doctorate, it was different from and superior to the postgraduate doctorate.

Although it was replaced by the “new regime” doctorate of 1984, some universities still use the Doctorate of Letters degree for their graduates. The qualification to supervise research has taken over certain functions of the doctor of letters.
