What is a PhD in Philosophy ?

The purpose of earning a Doctorate of Philosophy is to become an independent scholar and teacher of the subject. Perhaps the most important achievement during a Doctorate in Philosophy is the writing of the doctoral thesis, which is usually a student’s first substantial and original academic contribution to philosophy.

The coursework that is done prior to the dissertation is intended to serve as preparation for both the writing of the thesis and for teaching. In addition to the courses and the dissertation, students are required to assist in teaching undergraduate courses as part of their doctoral training.

Doctoral candidates have a supervisor with whom they meet regularly and who supervises their work. Students with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Philosophy are required to enter the doctoral program. Generally the program of study for this doctorate takes 7 years to complete.

At the end of their studies, students present a doctoral dissertation, which provides an original contribution to the deeper understanding of one or more philosophical problems or a defensible attempt to solve them. A defense takes place after receiving a sufficient number of positive examiner reports.
