Geology is a subfield of environmental studies and earth sciences that analyzes the history and physical structure of the earth, its constituent materials and the processes that shape it. 

Geology studies the chemical and physical properties of the earth’s materials, including minerals, natural gases, and water. It also deals with the hazards of the earth, such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and floods.

This advanced degree can be obtained in approximately four to six years of schooling, if students can attend school full time. Students must have earned a bachelor’s degree and usually a master’s degree as well before beginning their doctoral program.
