The Bachelor of Optometry is an undergraduate eye care program. Optometry is the science of eye care, including examination, diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases and disorders of the visual system.

It is a science of vision care. Bachelor of Optometry is a four-year course that contains three years of apprenticeship and one year of clinical experience internship.

What is and What Does a Bachelor in Optometry Do ?

Optics is the branch of science that involves the structure, function, and operation of the human eye. Optometrists are health professionals who have specialized in eye care.

They perform eye tests and provide solutions to patients suffering from vision disorders such as partial vision, hereditary vision defects, strabismus, weakening of the eye muscles, etc. They suggest alternative vision aids, such as glasses or contact lenses.

They also provide pre and post operative care for people who suffer from cataracts. Often, optometrists discover eye conditions caused by systemic problems, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, and refer their patients to other physicians.

Because the eye is one of the most important human organs, optometrists are offered a wide range of lucrative career options and are assigned the responsibility of leading others from darkness to light, literally.

In addition to career options, such as assisting ophthalmic doctors in public hospitals and private clinics, an optometrist may also go into private practice.

Such graduates may find career options such as those listed here:

  • Assisting ophthalmologists in hospitals/clinics
  • Practice in optical facilities.
  • Runs optical stores.
  • Offer clinical services to multinationals that manufacture and distribute ophthalmic lenses, contact lenses and ophthalmic instruments.
