How to Assemble a Basic Desktop PC ?
This set of instructions will help you assemble a basic computer capable of running most modern software packages found by the casual user. Modern computers become more affordable when users supplement their monetary investment with a few hours of effort. This computer build will be very basic and will be the minimum hardware needed to have a functional system.
Once you have all the necessary parts and materials, it will take 2-4 hours to assemble your computer and you will need to be able to use simple hand tools, such as a screwdriver and a pair of pliers.
Step 1: Getting parts
First you must buy the parts needed to build the computer. The parts we will use in this project:
Most, if not all, of these parts can be purchased together in what is known as a “barebone kit”.
In this case, the case, motherboard, CPU, hard drive and memory were purchased together at tigerdirect.com as a barebones kit for about $200. The DVD drive and cables were purchased at newegg.com for less than $30 prior to shipping.
There’s an obvious financial advantage to buying parts together, but less obvious is the benefit you’ll get from the amount of time you save by trying to research the compatibility of the parts. Caution: Check the manufacturer’s specifications on all items before you buy them. Kits are supposed to contain compatible parts, but errors can occur.
Step 2: Gather Tools and Supplies
Gather the tools you will need for the project:
You may not use each and every one of these tools at every installation, but it is best to have them on hand in case you have a use for them.
Warning: Using the wrong tools for the job (such as turning a screw with a blade) can cause damage to the equipment and personal injury.
Step 3: Open the case or drawer
Open the computer case by removing the side panels. Find the screws holding the side panels in place and remove them. To remove the panel, first slide it back and then lift it out of the case.
Warning: The case may have sharp edges. Handle with care to avoid injury.
Step 4: Prepare the case for assembly
Three things must be done before assembly begins:
Remove any parts or packing materials that have been shipped inside the box.
Remove the cover of the optical drive. In our case, we will remove the cover of the highest drive compartment tomount our drive. Do this by pressing the retaining tabs.
Make a note of the cables pre-installed in the case. These should be the front panel connections for functions such as the power switch, audio jacks, and USB ports. If they are not labeled, consult the manufacturer’s documentation and label them now before installing other parts in the case.
Step 5: Ground yourself
Place the grounding strap on your wrist and connect the other end to the computer case. If your strap is not equipped with a clip to attach to the case, find a place to snap it onto the metal. This will prevent static electricity buildup on your body from damaging computer components.
Caution: Static electricity can damage computer components. Always use a grounding strap when handling internal components.
Step 6: Install the Motherboard
To install the motherboard, we need parts that should have been included with the purchased components:
I/O Bezel is an adjustment panel installed on the back of the case that surrounds the interface ports on the motherboard. It must be included with the motherboard. Figure 12 shows the contents of the mainboard case.
The spacers are installed in the case’s screw holes to create a lift that separates the case and the mainboard. The screws are installed in the spacers. The screws and standoffs should be included with the box, but it is a good idea to order these items if they are not included.
Follow these steps to install the motherboard in the case:
Step 7: Install the hard disk
The hard drive is the device that stores all your data. It is 3.5″ wide and should be mounted so you can access the cable connections on the back. If that is not possible, you may need to connect the cables before installing the drive.

The CPU is the brain of the computer. It’s installed on the motherboard in the socket.
To install the CPU:
Find the corner mark that designates pin 1 of the CPU. On this AMD-branded processor, the corner is marked with an arrow. Refer to the manufacturer’s documentation for specific information about your processor.
Lift the small metal rod next to the socket. Locate the appropriate mark on the CPU socket and insert the CPU so that the marks are aligned.
Push the rod down to lock the processor in place.
Step 10: Install RAM
RAM is the temporary memory location from which the processor works. Permanently stored data is extracted from the disks and stored in RAM while the processor is working with it.
The memory is easy to install:
Place the RAM card in the socket. Verify that the notch on the card is in the correct location. If it is not, turn it 180º.
Press firmly on both ends of the board to place it in the socket. Make sure the tabs snap into place.
Caution: Pressing the boards when the tab is not aligned may damage the RAM cards as well as the motherboard.
Step 11: Install the CPU Fan
The CPU fan is actually a combination of a heat sink and a fan together. The unit extracts heat from the CPU.

Align the mounting holes on the case and the power supply.
Insert the screws and tighten.
Step 14: Connect the cables
With all the components installed in the case, the cable jungle can be daunting. It is important to consult the motherboard manual to ensure the correct connections are made. There are two types of connections, power and data.
Every device that has been installed needs power. The motherboard has two power connections and there are two connectors specifically for SATA devices (drives). The other connectors will run fans and other non-SATA devices.
Data cables connect the drives and front panel devices to the motherboard. Refer to your motherboard documentation for the exact location of the connectors.
Warning: Incorrect connections may damage components and cause personal injury.
Step 15: Closing
Now that the components are fully installed, the last thing you need to do is reinstall the side panels into the box.
The computer is now ready to be turned on and to have software loaded into it. If the computer has trouble starting up, check all component connections and mounting to make sure you have connected everything correctly.
Refer to the manuals of the individual components for specific troubleshooting information if the problems persist.

Case: This is the metal box where the electronic components that make the computer work are located. Sometimes called a CPU, this case is available in two models:

Also, the different components that are going to form a network can be interconnected or joined in different ways, being the chosen form a fundamental factor that is going to determine the performance and functionality of the network. However, the arrangement of the different components of a network is known as the network topology.
The ideal topology for a specific network will depend on different factors, such as the number of machines to be interconnected, the type of access to the physical environment that we want, etc.
Star:
Local area network in which each device, called a node, is connected to a computer or host computer with a star-shaped configuration (topology). Normally, it is a network that consists of a central device (the hub) and a set of connected terminals.
In a star network, messages are passed directly from one node to the hub, which manages the redistribution of information to the other nodes. The reliability of a star network is based on the fact that one node can fail without affecting the other nodes in the network. However, its weak point is that a failure in the hub irremediably causes the whole network to fail.
Ring:
Local area network in which the devices, nodes, are connected in a closed loop or ring. The messages in a ring network are passed from one node to another in a specific direction. As a message travels through the ring, each node examines the destination address attached to the message.
If the address matches that of the node, the node accepts the message. Otherwise it will regenerate the signal and pass the message to the next node in the loop. This regeneration allows a ring network to cover greater distances than star or bus networks.
