Belt sanders are among the largest and most powerful in the sanding world. Few tools can save you so much time or get your project done faster than these great woodworking and do-it-yourself power tools.

When smoothing large, flat surfaces, especially really rough ones, nothing beats the high speed and brute force of a belt sander. This heavy tool accepts sanding belts, which are continuous loops of reinforced abrasive cloth that fit over two cylindrical drums. The tool motor drives the rear drum while the front drum rotates freely. A tension release lever allows you to easily slide the belt on the drums. For proper belt operation, most sanders have a tracking adjustment knob that can be turned to center the belt.

What Is the Belt Sander Used for ?

A belt sander is a tool that can be used for a wide variety of jobs, let’s learn about some of its uses:

Wood or Metal Finishing

The belt sander is mainly used for sanding and finishing on wood or metal. They are ideal for large, flat surfaces such as wooden doors and furniture. Basically, the tool consists of a sandpaper belt that is wrapped around two rotating drums.

  • They are suitable for sanding shelves and cabinets. It can also be used for stripping metal surface finishes.
  • Just be sure to select the right sandpaper for the job, as sandpaper for metal surfaces differs greatly from the type used for wood surfaces.
  • One of the best uses for a belt sander is its ability to quickly and effectively repair interior doors that do not close properly.
  • A belt sander is an excellent tool to use when you need to sand large flat areas or shave a fraction of an inch off any piece of wood.

Advantages of Using Belt Sanders

Belt sanders are multi-purpose tools. In fact, they are defined as the most useful.

  • They are commonly used for trimming on a drawn line, sanding very rough surfaces that would be difficult to sand with water-based sanders, leveling surfaces (such as a replacement board on a hardwood floor) and rounding and shaping by freehand.
  • Because they are very powerful and can handle coarse grain, they excel at removing wood quickly.
  • Also, unlike vibratory and orbital sanders, the action of belt sanders is linear, so even with coarse grids, you can sand with the grain and get an attractive result.

Types or Models of Belt Sanders or Polishers

Manual Belt Sander

Belt Sander for Wood Sanding

Almost all belt sanders have the ability to sand wood, it depends on the type of work and the surface to be sanded to know which belt sander you need to smooth or finish your wood pieces.

Refining Belt Sanders

  • First, make sure the belt is oriented correctly. Some belts have a preferred direction, indicated by an arrow on the inside.
  • Non-directional belt sander belts can be installed anyway. The only adjustment you will probably have to make is to be careful to keep the belt centered on the roller.
  • Hold the belt sander, turn it on, and watch to see if the belt rubs against the carcass or begins to break through from the rollers.
  • With the trigger on, adjust the tracking knob until the belt is centered on the rollers. You may have to make a small adjustment when the sander is on the wood.
  • If your belt sander has automatic tracking, you don’t need to mess with any of these things.
  • Some sanders have variable speed. You can go to full speed most of the time, but you’ll want to adjust it for a delicate job.

Keeping the Belt Clean

Dirty gangs do a lousy job. A belt cleaning swab will remove the accumulation of sawdust generated by cutting all woods, especially with pine or sapphire woods.

Belt and Belt Sander Dust Bag Cleaning

Remove the dust bag and remove all dust from the sander (sparks and dust are a bad combination), then use a zirconia belt for best results.

How to Remove a Sanding Disc on a Belt Sander

  • You will need a service hex wrench (included with the unit), a standard flat head screwdriver, acetone cleaner, a rag and adhesive sandpaper.
  • One of the best evolutions of the belt sander came when they decided to add a vertical sanding disc to the side of the units to provide more sanding surface area and control.
  • Newer sanding machines generally have a sanding spindle (metal or wood screw) coated with a thin rubber layer so that the operator can adhere the adhesive sanding discs without much effort.
  • You will need to replace the sanding disc if it is worn, has bare spots on its surface, or you can see through the sand surface to the backing paper.

Remove the Vertical Sanding Disc from the Belt Sander

  • Before fitting your adhesive sanding disc, you should take the sanding shaft to facilitate the removal of the worn sanding disc from the spindle or screw.
  • Depending on the model of your machine, there may be steps or safety screws or bolts that must also be removed to remove the sanding disc from the shaft.
  • Be sure to practice standard locking procedures before handling machine parts to avoid injury.
  • Once the power has been disconnected, you can begin removing the sanding disc shaft from the housing. The old sanding pad will have to be removed to make it much easier.
  • Follow the instructions for removing the screw from the machine assembly, if it does not come out of the unit, do not worry, and continue with the next step.
  • Once you have removed the screw, hold it on a bench for a better working surface, making sure not to force or damage the screw.
  • Now take the flathead screwdriver and start lifting the edge of the sanding disc carefully, making sure not to peel or break the rubber coating on the disc.
  • This surface must remain intact for your new pad to adhere properly to the disc, without slipping during operation.
  • Rotate the disc or move it as you lift the edges.
  • You should see that it is coming out without too much effort, if it is difficult, you may also be removing the rubber, which will ruin the effectiveness of the parts.
  • Make sure you do not remove the rubber layer to which the disc adheres.

Clean Any Remaining Glue on the Belt Sander

  • Once the old sanding disc is removed, you can apply acetone to a cloth and wipe off any residual glue on the disc surface.
  • You cannot damage the rubber and the glue will have to be removed from the drive completely. Once the surface has been cleaned and dried, apply the new sanding disc adhesive to the rubber surface evenly.
  • Allow it to rest, or even apply pressure before use to ensure it is attached properly. Once the pad is secured, remount the shaft to the unit if you remove it.
  • Make sure the side table is locked with a 1 to 2 mm gap from the sanding disc.

How to Follow the Belt on Sanding Machines

  • You will need safety gloves, earplugs, a work table or sturdy table and clamps.
  • If you want to keep your belt sander in top shape, you need to know how to do the basic maintenance work.
  • One maintenance technique you should learn, especially if it doesn’t have an automatic tracker, is how to track the sanding belt on your sander.

Put on your Safety Equipment when Using the Belt Sander

  • Before you start tracking your belt sander, put on all your safety equipment. Safety should always come first when handling power tools.
  • Wear your gloves and safety glasses and insert earplugs before you begin.
  • Once everything is set up, place the belt sander on the workbench and secure it with the clamp. The clamp ensures that the machine will not tip over or move while working.

Find the Tracking Knob

  • To locate the tracking knob on the belt sander, turn the sander so that the front handle rests on the table.
  • Make sure you are using a work table or space that is safe and not wobbly.
  • The belt sander can be quite heavy, so a sturdy workspace is crucial.
  • Once you have turned the belt sander over, look for a knob on the side of the machine. You will use this knob to track the belt sander. The knob squeezes the front wheel of the sander.

Checking the Sander

  • Once you’ve located the tracking knob, you’re on your way to tracking the belt sander.
  • However, you must first check the belt to determine in which direction the belt should be tracked.
  • To do this, use one hand to hold the tracking knob on the belt sander and place the other hand on the back handle of the sander.
  • Make sure the front of the tool is firmly attached to the top of the workbench. Also make sure nothing is touching the sanding belt.
  • When everything is in place, turn on the belt sander and try to see in which direction the sanding belt should be traced.

Follow the Sanding Belt

  • To start tracking, turn the knob in the direction needed to adjust the belt sander.
  • Turning the knob clockwise will move the belt to the left. Turning the knob counterclockwise will move the belt to the right.
  • While performing this task, always be careful with the belt to ensure that it does not rub against the wall or get too close to the edge of the sander.

How to Make or Manufacture a Belt Sander ?

Here’s how we made a prototype of a simple belt sander using waste material. Before you begin, remember to use the necessary safety implements to perform this task and take the necessary safety measures in turn. The electric motor was an original 550w whirlpool pump. At 2400 rpm, the belt passes at 15 m/s. The base is made of 120 mm “C” profile iron. The wheels are original spare 125 mm swivel wheels for a width of 30 mm. The machine is designed to use the same belt from another belt sander we had, but divided into three (belt 4×36).

  • Step 1: Adaptation of the motor flange The electric motor is an original hydromassage pump. For this project, we need to remove the impeller and modify the flange on the lathe. We build a motor shaft adapter to extend and house the wheel.
  • Step 2: Make the base frame. The base is made with two pieces of 120 mm “C” iron profile. The horizontal piece supports the motor and underneath the electrical connections and the motor capacitor. In the vertical piece, we made slots for the support tables and the flat plates. On the back side the vertical piece for the support of the upper wheel. The spring inside the vertical pillar keeps the sanding belt tight on the wheels. To cover the electrical contacts, with a scrap aluminum plate we made the lower cover of the base. We used a sheet shear and a hydraulic press.
  • Step 3: Make support tables and flat plates. With some metal parts, we made the fixed table supports for sanding and supporting the plate to provide a flat sanding surface.
  • Step 4: Make the top frame. The top frame is made to support the wheel bearing hub. The frame is shaped like an “L”. At the top, there is a cross hole like a hinge and a slot for the bearing hub. The bearing hub is hinged on the frame and a screw knob allows for adjustable wheel tilt. The bearing hub is made on a lathe.
  • Step 5: Finish. And finally the wheels. The machine works very well. At the end of your assembly project remember to test the sanding machine for 10 minutes continuously to verify its proper operation.

How to Change the Belt of the Sander ?

  • Step 1: Release the belt tension lever. Belt sanders use the tension to hold your belt in place. Our tension lever is located on the left front side of the sander. We simply pull it back and the belt loosens.
  • Step 2: Pull the old belt off the sander. Remove that suction cup and throw it away. We don’t need it anymore.
  • Step 3: Grab and line up the new belt. The title says it all. Make sure you have the right size (length and width) for your type of sander. Make sure you put the belt in the right direction. There are arrows on the inside of the belt. There should also be a clearly marked arrow on your sander. Match the arrows on the belt and your sander in the same direction before installing the belt. This will prevent your belt from breaking.
  • Step 4: Slide in the new belt. Slide the belt and align it with the wheels.
  • Step 5: Retighten the lever. Once you have the new belt around the wheels and aligned where you want it, you can re-activate the tension lever. And there you have it, you have successfully changed your belt.

How to Sharpen Knives With Belt Sanders ?

To sharpen your knives, start with a 150-grit belt. Slowly pass one side of the knife through the belt a few times with light pressure (the sharp edge should point downward at an acute angle to the belt). Then sand the other side.

Turn off the sander, replace a 240 grit belt and sharpen again. Repeat the cycle for 400 g, 20 micron and finally 9 micron belts. Clean the stains with a leather sanding belt treated with a polishing compound.

How to Disassemble a Belt Sander ?

This is the (partial) disassembly of a SKIL model 7313 belt sander.

  • Step 1 Removal of the top panel. Remove the screw at the top of the
  • Step 2 Remove the drive belt. This is difficult for some people, so don’t be surprised if you can’t remove it, especially if the gears are rusty.
  • Step 3 Remove the panel covering the wiring. This has six screws, for some you need to look a little harder, and some are visible.
  • Step 4 Remove the sandpaper roller. This piece is on the other side of the device and has two deep screws.
  • Step 5 Remove the opposite side cover. Half of the handle is part of this cover.
  • Step 6 If necessary, remove the motor wiring.

How to Change Belt Sander Rollers ?

  • Step 1: Unplug the belt sander’s power cord from the wall outlet. Find the lever on the side of the belt sander under the body. Pull the lever forward to release the belt tension.
  • Step 2: Slide the old sandpaper belt off the front and rear rollers of the sander. Look for the arrows on the inside of the new sandpaper belt and the arrow on the side of the belt sander.
  • Step 3: Place the new sandpaper belt on the rollers with the arrow on the sandpaper pointing in the same direction as the arrow on the sander. Push the belt over the rollers until the edge of the sandpaper is level with the sides of the rollers.
  • Step 4: Push the lever on the side of the sander into position. The front and rear wheels will move to the end of the sander and lock into place.

How to Make a Homemade Belt Sander With the Drill Step by Step ?

This is an example of a prototype Drill Belt Sander, but using 3D technology, which is becoming more and more common:

Creating the project with only 3D printed parts would have been possible, but the filament would have become expensive. Instead, we wanted to combine the benefits of low-cost steel hardware parts with a printable design. Everything was printed on regular ABS, so there is no need to track down rare filaments.

Here’s what you’ll need:

– Two angle brackets at least 2 “(50 mm) long.
– 6′ of 5/16” threaded rod.
– 2m of 8mm threaded rod.
– Steel spacers to attach threaded rod.
– Washers for joining threaded rod.
– Nuts to join threaded rod.
– All-metal safety nuts for threaded rod connection.
– Six 608ZZ bearings, these are the ones used in skateboarding equipment.
– Wing nuts to join threaded rod (optional but nice).

You will need hand tools, an electric drill and a 3D printer, or access to one. Your power drill will need no modifications.

Step 1: 3D printing of files

The first image is animated if you want to see how the parts around you look.

All STL files can be downloaded. If you have a large print bed, download the “Belt Sander All Parts.stl” file; in fact, you can download only the “Belt Sander Parts Half1.stl” print, then print the image on the mirror and you will have all the parts you need.

Please print the parts with high filling. The third image shows the danger of printing with only 10% filling, the parts are too weak to withstand a shooting accident.

Step 2: Pulley assembly

There are three pulleys in the project. Two of them have bearing bushes and must be matched to the parts holding the perpendicular threaded rods.

The third pulley accepts a threaded rod that must be held firmly in place with the all-metal lock nuts. It may be necessary to use a long socket to tighten them together.

One side of the threaded rod should be long enough for a spacer, bearing and locking nut. The other side should be as long as another 6 “(15 cm) or more. This is where the drill will be attached. This pulley should also be fitted with rubber bands.

Step 3: Drive Plate Assembly

Four segments of threaded rod should be cut at 12 “(30 cm) each. Angle braces should have their outermost holes drilled to 5/16” or 8 mm.

The threaded rods and angle braces should be placed on the printed unit plate. The nuts that touch the angle braces should be tightened as much as possible. Now is also a good time to insert the bearings into the drive plate.

Step 4: Final Assembly

It’s time to put it all together.

  • The drive shaft must be mounted first. The spacers go on the threaded rod, one of which touches each of the nuts. From there, the drive plates can be fixed by pushing the threaded rods through the bearings. The idea is that when the drive shaft is rotated, everything it touches should be stopped with respect to the shaft. Pass the belt around each pulley before placing it on the threaded rod and put the nuts in place to keep the pulleys fixed. This is where wing nuts come in handy.
  • Connect an electric drill to the protruding drive shaft. It is possible to operate the sander without a bench, just hold something that is not moving and activate the drill with the other hand.
  • If you plan to use it as a desktop sander, it may be necessary to insert some of the threaded rods into a piece of drilled wood. This only holds one end so that the belt does not ruin the work surface. It does not hurt to hold this to your work surface.
  • Use a clamp to hold the drill in place. Depending on the type of drill, it may be necessary to rest the sander on a piece of scrap wood.

Abrasives for Belt Sanders

These sanders are specially designed for use on belt sanders. They come in different sizes, among the most common are:

  • 1 inch x 30.42 or 44 inches
  • 2 ½ inches x 16 inches
  • 3 inches x 18, 21, 23 ¾ or 27 inches
  • 4 inches x 21, 21 3/4, 24 or 36 inches
